Help!

Blogfriends, I need help.

I'm in the middle of a super fun project and I can't find the perfect shade of chartreuse paint.

Anyone have any ideas? Is there a chartreuse out there that you think is the best?

I need the gorgeous green in the lantern in the Chiang Mai Dragon (aquamarine colorway).

Soup's on.

It's pretty typical for me to leave the office with absolutely NO idea about what I'm going to make for dinner, which leads to some pretty expensive grocery bills at Central Market (Cafe).

I love to cook, but at 6:30PM, the thought of buying all of the ingredients for dinner and then going home to make it is less than appealing. And let's also face this: I'm a complete and total grocery store snob.

But in an effort to channel my inner recessionista (can you hear Allen laughing?), I've decided to start meal planning and minimizing my trips to the grocery store.

I've also agreed to start shopping at Tom Thumb rather than Whole Foods, but I'm not really ready to talk about that yet.

So tonight I decided to start with an oldie but a goodie...my mom's clam chowder recipe.

For those of you who only enjoy the thick New England style chowder, this is not the recipe for you. But for the rest of you, try this...I promise you'll love it.

Here's the ingredient list:
4-6 bacon slices
3 small red potatoes cut into 1/2 inch cubes
1 small onion finely chopped
1 can chicken broth
2 cans minced clams, drained
1 bottle clam juice
3 tbsp Wondra flour
2 cups Half-and-Half (you can substitute milk; I use fat-free H&H)

Start by chopping the bacon and frying it over medium heat in a soup pan. When it's crisp, remove the bacon and drain on paper towel. Pour off all of the drippings, but don't scrape up the yummy brown bits from the bottom of the pan.

Add the chopped onion to the pan, cooking and stirring until translucent. Then add the potatoes and the chicken broth, and scrape the bottom of the pan with your wooden spoon to loosen the brown bits from the pan.

Simmer the mixture for about 15 minutes, stirring every so often. At this point, it's not going to look like a traditional clam chowder base, but that's ok. This isn't traditional clam chowder.

After the soup has simmered, stir in the clams and the clam juice and then let that mixture gently simmer for 2 more minutes before you add the bacon.

In a separate container add the Wondra flour to the half and half, stirring well until mixed. Slowly add 1/2 cup of the hot soup into the half and half mixture and then pour that into the soup pan slowly, stirring the entire time. Stir until desired consistency is reached and the soup is piping hot, but don't let it boil.

Add beau monde seasoning to taste, and a little garlic salt if desired. I also add a few dashes of Tabasco just to add a little dimension.

Then serve it up!

And watch your back...you might have a little unexpected help cleaning up the kitchen.

(BTW, friends who eat at my house: I do not let Tilly clean the counters by licking them or by any other means. I promise I cleaned the countertops w/Mrs. Meyer's as soon as we were finished with dinner. But when I turned around and she was doing this, it was just too funny NOT to take a picture.)

Best part of the night?

Allen on dish duty. Love him!

Good bones, GREAT blog!

Today is all about inspiration, blogfriends.  I'm turning over a new leaf, and simply refuse to let Mondays get me down.

Did that sound desperate convincing?

If you don't already follow the blog good bones, great pieces (and you probably do, as I seem to be the last person to know about this fabulousness), log into Bloglines and add them immediately.

The brilliant and charming minds behind the blog are these darling people...

...Lauren and Suzanne McGrath. It's a mother/daughter duo with 2 impressive bios and amazing style!

I'm digging this post on vintage hotel silver.  What's better than a piece with a little history, even if you have to add a little imagination and make the story up?

Inspiration

It's a beautiful sunny day here (finally!!) and I'm short on time...but thanks to Anna Spiro of Absolutely Beautiful Things,  I'm not short on inspiration!

Doesn't this picture just make you want to go upholster something?

Prince Harry and The Running Joke.

This weekend has gone by in  a flash...our friend Scott Stanzel is giving a speech in Dallas tomorrow, so he came in town early to spend a few days with us. Allen and Scott were roomates in DC for several years, so on Friday night we went to Park for dinner with their third roomate, Rich and his fiancee, Alexis.

If you live in the Dallas area and haven't been to Park, you should go...the food is great and they have a really fun drink menu, but the decor is SO cool. Big graphic print wallpaper and carpeting, vintage sofas and upholstered walls...it's pretty fab.

This weekend was the beginning of Partner's Card, so I spent a lot of time on Saturday getting some Christmas shopping out of the way...and made another stop at CityCraft. I just love that store! Everytime I stop in, I find something else I love and and just have to have.

Probably no need for me to pontificate on my feelings about Halloween again, so Allen and Scott went out on their own...but I do have to say that for the first time EVER I came up with a few creative costume ideas from things we already had around the house. I know, toot toot of my own horn and all that, but it's really kind of a big deal for me. It probably won't ever happen again!

So, without further ado...

I introduce you to Prince Harry.

2 cans of hairspray, a google search for Prince Harry's coat of arms, our printer was all it took...fortunately we've got the red hair part down.

And for the the real piece de resistance...a "running joke."  Easiest. costume. ever. Running clothes and a paint pen.

Allen was really in character, obviously.

So after they left, I completely turned into a geek. I admit it, but you know what?

It was AWESOME.

I turned on Lost in Austen (see, told you...huge nerd), set up my sewing machine in the family room and got to work on a new bed for Tilly.

Quick aside: about 3 months ago, I came home from work to find this:

She destroyed her bed. It's partially my fault, because I took the cover off of it to wash it and put a towel over the insert, which had a rip in it, and she thought it would be a fun toy.

So she needed a new one...and she better not destroy it this time.

She digs it, clearly.

In fact, she's curled up on it right now.

Oh, boo.

It's been a looooong week and I'm tired, so I'm just going to come out and say this:

I don't really like Halloween.

I know, I know...it's so fun to get dressed up in costumes, and there are so many fun decorating ideas....I've  heard it all. But the thing is, I really don't like spooky things. Never have, probably never will. I've never seen a horror movie (except for Scream when I was in middle school and I was FREAKED OUT for weeks). And things like spiders and rats and bats gross me out.

Also, I find it kind of frustrating that it's nearly impossible to find a costume for a girl that is not a "sexy something."  Like "Sexy hippie", and "Sexy Robin Hood".

People, Robin Hood was A MAN.

Ok, rant over. Moving on to more cheerful things.

You know what I do love that's kind of Halloweeny (if that's even a word)?

The color orange.

This is a new love for me...we're in the beginning of our relationship, so I haven't introduced orange to the rest of our house yet. But one search on 1st Dibs is all it took---I'm beginning to think that maybe orange and I need to make a commitment.

I mean, seriously. How could I resist??

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

Get excited.

Friday Night Lights is back.

If you are lucky enough to have DirecTV, then tonight at 9PM EST, you will be able to watch the premier of the fourth season of the hands down best. show. ever.

I have to wait for the episodes to run on NBC next year and I can hardly stand it. Coach Taylor is at East Dillon, Julie is a senior, the jerky QB from last season is apparently even worse, Matt Saracen is delivering pizza and Tim Riggins is...well, Tim Riggins.

Knew that would get your attention.

Also, if you've never watched the show and don't really consider yourself a big football fan, don't be surprised when you find yourself cheering at the top of your lungs and jumping up and down when the game scenes are on. It's totally normal.

Right?
